Brooks Fletcher

Brooks Fletcher is a photographer and visual artist based in Oakland. After receiving a BA in Communication Studies from Sacramento State, he served 11 years on active duty in the United States Army as a photojournalist, specializing in public affairs and strategic and mass communication. Following his military service, Brooks received an MFA in Photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Since then, the Oakland-native has become an active participant in the Bay Area's photography community, creating work that explores the nature of photographs, phenomenology, and the medium's capacity to challenge perception and perspective.

As part of his practice, Brooks creates photographs exclusively using reversal film, which produces a positive image on a transparent base. He places these transparencies in hand-built frames designed to backlight and present the lived experience in the most authentic way possible: from the film itself. His departure from printed photographs is intended to extend an alternate approach toward photography in an age of digital reproduction and showcase the relevance and importance of photographic education in modern society.
